Latest News Congratulations to The Blandford School, league winners for 2005-6, and to Burgate School & Swanage Middle School, who won the team competitions at the Score Championships at Moors Valley. Final results for the Schools Championships have now been posted. The new season's fixtures are currently under discussion but will probably start in early October with an event at Blandford Camp. There will be an earlier chance to run at Blandford Camp at the Furrow Hoppers relays on July 16 and schools are encouraged to enter teams (of four runners) n the junior relay class. Details will be available shortly.
Members of the Blandford School team which won the l2005-6 Dorset Schools League after the trophy presentation at Moors Valley
Congratulations are also due to Emily Benham & Alice Butt, who ran for the English Schools team at the World Schools Champs in Slovakia last week, and were part of the English team which won the team gold in their age group. Congratulations also to Julia Blomquist, of SARUM and a former member of this league in her time at Clayesmore Prep, who won an individual gold in the short race in her age group. Dorset Schools League v Avon Schools League Feb 5th Thanks to all who competed, and special thanks to Lynn Branford for acting as Team Manager and John Lewis (ASOA Team Manager) for calculating the results. This was our first ever match against another schools league and it was good to see so many of you turning out on what was for many of you, your first experience of a big event. John Lewis has provided results for individual and team scores . The team scores were for the best 30 performances from each side, and show a narrow victory for Avon Schools by 2540 points to 2402 points for Dorset. (The results have been calculated as for the league, with 100 points for a course winner, and other scores calculated as a ratio ie. twice the winner's time equals 50 points. If we had used the Yvette Baker Trophy scoring method, Avon would still be winners, but only by about 5 points!)

In addition, Harry Butt was 3rd
in 5B, Lucy Benham 4th in 9G & Terence Furlong (PGS) 7th in 11B. On the Saturday, Alice Butt won the W16 selection race, with Emily 6th and Julia won the W14 selection race, whilst Seb Sheehan (CPS), another one who mispunched on Sunday, won the Orange class at the training event. More pictures here
Some of our winners getting their medals from Heather Munro All events offer colour coded courses from White to at least Light Green + something for local adult club orienteers (either a Green, Blue or a Score course). Some events such as Galoppens offer the full range of colour coded courses, but schools competitors only use White to Green. Most events will offer SI punching, bagged & pre-marked maps (late-comers may find they have to use master maps if stocks of overprinted maps run short). 2005 - 06 There are normally eight events over the school year, with only one event, plus the score championships, in the summer term. Sept 11 Dorset Schools League 1 - WSX Gallopen, Rempstone (further details from WSX website - see Links page) Oct 1st (Sat)
League event 2 - Clayesmore School campus, Blandford Starts
2.00-4.00 pm Oct 23 Event 3 Bovington - This event was also the WIM Gallopen & an army championship event. Points now calculated Oct 30 Event 4 Sarum Gallopen , Longleat Nov 13 Event 5 Moors Valley (Dec 4 - As a large number of schools league competitors will be running for SARUM in the Yvette Baker Trophy finals, we will look to add another date next term, rather than using the SOC event on this date) 2006 26 Feb Event 7 Inside Park, Blandford 23 April Event 8 - Ringwood North (this newly arranged fixture is the last in this year's series) 12 May - Dorset Schools Championships, Moors Valley RULES The Dorset Schools Orienteering League is run by Wimborne Orienteers in close co-operation with all the other local orienteering clubs (WSX, SARUM, SOC). It is open to anyone attending schools in Dorset, S Wilts, & W. Hants ( & indeed schools from the Isle of Wight & the Channel Islands may occasionally attend.) There are usually about 8 league events during the season and we count the best 5 performances for each runner & each school. Points are awarded on a time basis: the winner in each school year group gets 100 points, subsequent runners get points according to the formula points = 100 x your time/winners time Pairs share the points. If you run down a course, you get half points. Younger runners on White shadowed by parents also get half points. Courses White - Year 6 and below Girls & Boys Yellow - Year 7 Girls & Boys and Year 8 Girls Orange - Year 8 & 9 Boys and Year 9 & 10 Girls Light Green - Year 10 & 11 Boys, Year 11 Girls Green - Year 12+ Boys & Girls. If there is no Green course (perhaps because the area is too small or simple to support it), these year groups also run Light Green Blue - Where these are available, older runners may also run this course and qualify for schools points If you run up a course, your scores are calculated from the performance of the course winners. If you are the leading runner on the course, points are calculated from your time ( eg at Rockford in Sept 2000, Stefanie Blomquist (8G) was the first girl on Light Green so she got the 100 points and the Years 10 & 11 Girls scores were calculated from her time. Alice Butt (6G) ran up on Orange but wasn't the first girl home - her scores were calculated from the winner's time.) School teams acquire points by taking the best 4 performances per League event. We try to notify all interested schools and mail them at regular intervals, but details don't always get through to the right people. If you want to enter yourself or your school in the league, please e-mail the league administrator, Dick Keighley Boys

Electronic punching With the help of a grant from Sport England, WIM purchased a set of SI equipment for electronic punching together with notebook computers etc. At the moment we have about 50 punching stations which means that we can use the equipment for small events and hire extra boxes for major events like Badge & Galoppen events. WSX have bought a similar set with their grant which means that working together we can cater for big events as well. Larger SARUM events tend to use the WIM & WSX kit or use the army's EMIT kit.SOC have their own EMIT equipment. (WIM also intend to use some of the equipment in local schools. Orienteering is not only on the National Curriculum for PE but the SI equipment allows cross-curricular links to IT etc.) Where possible, we use electronic punching at most schools league events. We can't use it for all events - some areas like Bryanston are very public and with the control stations costing £60 each we can't afford to lose any, so areas where we have had control vandalism in the past may still use control cards and pin punching. E-cards for punching cost £17or so to buy or 50p/event to hire. WIM have got 200 cards for hire and we allow schools to use them for free at league events and we are considering fitting extra wrist straps on them to make them difficult to mislay in the forest. However schools should be aware that any lost cards must be paid for.
Congratulations to St Leonard's Middle School, Blandford, who were last season's year's league winners in the school's final year. Re-organisation amongst the Blandford schools meant that St Leonard's ceased to exist at the end of last term. Most of the team will be moving on to Blandford Upper School and with the strong parental support which the team has developed , it looks like they will be a force to be reckoned with this next year. Adrian Mitchell, the team's coach, has moved to Swanage and we will hope to see a resurgence of orienteering at Swanage Middle School, former league members, in the future The Score Championships at Moors Valley saw just over 70 runners overall, with many excellent performances and some younger orienteers showing great promise for the future. Burgate just beat Clayesmore Senior in the Secondary schools class whilst Hale Primary produced an extraordinary team result in the Primary, Middle & Prep schools class, scoring almost as heavily as the senior school teams containing runners 5 or 6 years older than them. Congratulations are also in order to Stef Blomquist (Clayesmore), Emily Benham (Burgate) and Alice Butt (S WIlts GS) who were selected by BOF for various international tours last summer with the BOF Start squads. Stef was picked to run for GB at the European Youth Orienteering Championships in the Czech Republic and also went on the BOF M/W 17/18 tour to Uppsala in the summer. Emily went to Halden in Norway with the BOF M/W16 tour, whilst Alice went to Glenmore in Scotland with the M/W15's.
